Your sportswear is built to perform — not just during your workouts, but through countless washes. The technical fabrics that wick away sweat, regulate body temperature, and dry quickly need special care to maintain their performance. Washing or drying them the wrong way can damage the fibers and reduce their effectiveness. Here’s how to wash and dry your activewear with care, so it lasts longer and continues to support your best performance.

Understand the Materials – and Why They Need Special Care

Modern sportswear is often made from synthetic fibers such as polyester, spandex, and nylon. These materials are engineered to move moisture away from your skin, keeping you dry and comfortable while you train. But the same properties that make them high-performing also make them sensitive to heat, fabric softeners, and harsh washing methods.

High temperatures can break down elasticity, while fabric softeners can coat the fibers, blocking their ability to wick moisture. That’s why it’s important to understand what your gear needs — and to follow the care label closely.

Wash Cool – and Skip the Fabric Softener

Most performance fabrics come clean in cold or warm water, around 86°F (30°C). Lower temperatures protect both the fabric and the environment.

  • Use a mild detergent designed for synthetic or activewear fabrics. Avoid bleach or strong enzymes that can weaken fibers.
  • Never use fabric softener — it can clog the fabric’s pores and reduce breathability.
  • Turn garments inside out to protect colors, prints, and reflective details.
  • Wash activewear separately from cotton items and towels, which can shed lint and trap odors.

If your gear smells musty, soak it in cold water with a splash of white vinegar for 15 minutes before washing. Vinegar helps neutralize bacteria and odors without harming the material.

Drying – The Critical Step

It’s tempting to toss your workout clothes in the dryer, but high heat can ruin their stretch and shape. To keep your gear performing at its best:

  • Air-dry whenever possible. Hang items on a drying rack or clothesline out of direct sunlight to prevent fading.
  • Avoid dryers, radiators, or hot air cabinets. Excessive heat can damage elastic fibers and shorten the garment’s life.
  • Hang clothes right after washing so they don’t sit damp and develop odor.

Air drying preserves elasticity, breathability, and fit — and extends the lifespan of your sportswear.

Remove Odors Without Overwashing

Persistent sweat odors can be tough to eliminate, especially in synthetic fabrics. Instead of washing your gear repeatedly, try these odor-fighting tricks:

  • Air out your clothes after each workout before tossing them in the laundry basket.
  • Use a sports detergent with antibacterial properties if odors linger.
  • Freeze your clothes overnight in a sealed plastic bag — the cold kills odor-causing bacteria.

These methods are gentler on the fabric than frequent washing and help maintain your gear’s technical performance.

Storage – The Overlooked Step

Even the best washing routine won’t help if your clothes are stored improperly. Never leave damp activewear in a gym bag — it’s the perfect environment for bacteria and odor. Make sure your clothes are completely dry before storing them, and avoid cramming them tightly in drawers. Proper storage helps preserve both freshness and shape.

A Smart Investment in Performance

Quality sportswear is an investment in comfort and performance. By washing and drying it with care, you can significantly extend its life and maintain the features that make it special — whether you’re running, cycling, or hitting the gym. It’s not just about keeping your clothes looking good; it’s about preserving their function so you can perform your best, workout after workout.
