Activewear goes through a lot. It’s stretched, sweated in, washed frequently, and exposed to all kinds of weather. So it’s no surprise when zippers break, seams split, or fabric loses its stretch. But instead of tossing it out, you can bring your gear back to life with a few simple repairs—saving both money and resources. Here’s how to make your workout clothes last longer.

Know Your Fabric – and Choose the Right Repair Method

Most activewear is made from technical fabrics like polyester, spandex, or nylon. These materials need a bit of care when you repair them. Always check the care label and note whether the fabric is stretchy or woven—this determines what thread and stitch type to use.

  • Stretch fabrics (like leggings and fitted tops) should be sewn with elastic thread or a zigzag stitch so the seam can move with the fabric.
  • Woven fabrics (like running shorts or lightweight jackets) can be sewn with regular polyester thread.
  • Waterproof or windproof materials often need special repair tape or adhesive to maintain their performance.

Choosing the right method helps ensure your repair holds up through your next run or gym session.

Fixing Small Holes and Tears

A small hole in your leggings or running shirt doesn’t mean it’s time to say goodbye. You can use iron-on patches or fabric glue made for synthetic materials. Cut a patch slightly larger than the hole, place it on the inside, and press gently with a warm iron (low heat) or apply glue and let it set.

For a more durable fix, sew the hole closed with small, tight stitches. Use a needle designed for stretch fabrics to avoid damaging the fibers.

Zippers, Drawstrings, and Elastic Bands

Broken zippers are one of the most common reasons people throw out activewear—but they’re often easy to fix.

  • If the zipper slider doesn’t close the teeth properly, try gently squeezing it with pliers to tighten it.
  • If teeth are missing or broken, replace the zipper entirely—lightweight zippers for sportswear are available at most craft or fabric stores.
  • Elastic waistbands or cuffs can be replaced by opening a small section of the seam, threading in a new elastic band, and sewing the opening closed again.

These quick fixes require only basic sewing skills but can add years to your gear’s life.

Refresh Function and Fit

Even if your activewear isn’t torn, it can lose its performance over time. If the fabric feels stretched out, try washing it in cold water with a mild detergent and no fabric softener—this can help restore elasticity. For windproof or water-repellent jackets, use a reproofing spray or wash-in treatment to bring back their protective qualities.

Check seams and hems regularly. A small repair now can prevent a bigger tear later.

Give Old Gear a Second Life

If your activewear is too worn to repair, you can still make use of it. Old workout shirts can become cleaning cloths, headbands, or patches for other clothes. Reflective strips or logos can be cut off and reused on other gear for added visibility.

Repurposing keeps textiles out of landfills and gives your old favorites a new purpose.

A Sustainable Habit That Pays Off

Repairing your activewear isn’t just about saving money—it’s about making a conscious choice to reduce waste. The textile industry uses enormous amounts of energy and water, and extending the life of your clothes helps cut down on new production.

With a little patience and the right tools, you can keep your activewear in rotation for years—and maybe even discover the satisfaction of fixing things yourself.
